French
Students are required to have a marble composition book. This will be used instead of a text book.
The teacher suggests students make flash cards every time they receive new vocabulary words in class. The French word should be written in ink or marker on one side of the card and the English meaning should be written in pencil on the back side of the card. Students should study these fifteen minutes every evening. They can even go through them during the commercials of their favorite TV show or on the bus. Here are some techniques for using the cards:
1. Go through the cards the first time looking at the French words. If you know the meaning of the French word in English, put that card aside in a "done pile". If you don't know the meaning or get the meaning incorrect, put the card back in stack of cards you are holding to review it again. Go through the cards until all of the cards are in the "done pile". :)
2. Think you know all of your words? Challenge yourself. Go through the cards again. This time look at the English word and try to say the word in French. If you can say the French word, put that card aside in a "done pile". If you don't know the French word, put the card back in stack of cards you are holding to review it again. Go through the cards until all of the cards are in the "done pile". :)
3. So you think you are REALLY good? Now go through them again looking at the English word. This time try to spell the word in French. You can write the word or try to spell it to a friend or parent. The words you miss go back in the deck. The words you spell correctly go into the done pile.
The key to success in French is to be in class regularly and to repeat, repeat and repeat. It is also very important not to fall behind. Learning a language is like building a skyscraper. You need a good, solid foundation before you can go to the next level.
