"One of the biggest advantages to taking AP Calc BC while still in high school is time. In college, you might have a Calc 2 course that meets for 50 minutes, three times a week for a total of 14 to 16 weeks. When I was in AP Calc, we met for double that time, every day of the week, all year long. This extra time really allowed me to learn and internalize the material in ways I might not have if I'd waited until college. College math courses go by fast (as an applied math major, I should know!). You don't have the luxury of extra time to really dig deeply into the concepts being taught and cement them in your brain for future use. You don't get to explore the really interesting, exciting, and practical uses Calculus has, because the time in a college level Calc course is so constrained. I served as a math tutor all throughout college and one of the biggest complaints my students brought up for both Calc 1 and 2 was the feeling they didn't have enough time to learn the material. Taking Calculus in high school gives you that opportunity. My decision to take AP Calc BC in high school was one of the best decisions I made as a student. It was my absolute favorite class I ever took and given the chance to go back, I'd do it all over again.
